Akira Matcha

Akira Matcha Organic Ceremonial Matcha

Our Rating 97/100

For this Akira Matcha review, we ordered one ounce of Akira Matcha from Amazon. We received the order in a couple of days and we were excited to open the resealable aluminum can and evaluate the color, aroma and grind.

We should note that Akira Matcha is one of three matchas available from the Matcha Konomi  company.

  • Akira Matcha is their Organic Ceremonial Grade Matcha.
  • Amaya Matcha is their Non-Organic Ceremonial Grade Matcha.
  • Oishi Matcha is their Organic Gourmet Grade Matcha.

Here is a video showing how matcha is made from start to finish by Matcha Konomi.

We always recommend Ceremonial Grade Matcha for making matcha green tea. The other grades can be used for cooking and smoothies, etc.

It is important to note that Akira Matcha and all of the matcha from Matcha Konomi is tested by independent laboratories for the presence of radiation and lead.

Matcha Konomi publishes the results of these tests so that you can be confident that you are getting a safe matcha.

Matcha Konomi Test for Lead and Radiation

Now that you know how Matcha Konomi makes their matcha and that is safe, let's get on with the Akira Matcha Review!

The first thing we noticed about the Akira Matcha tin is that it has a different top than most of the best matcha powder.

We usually see a pop top similar to a soda can, but the Akira Matcha has a tab that you pull to open the tin as you can see in the photo below.

Akira Matcha Tin top

We definitely prefer the pop top as it is easier to grasp. While we didn't have any trouble opening the tin, we could see how someone with less agile hands could have an issue.

Once we opened the can of Akira Matcha, we looked for that initial smell. The classic earthy, grassy aroma that is indicative of the best matcha and this matcha did not disappoint!

Akira Matcha Review Of Color and Grind

Color and Grind Rating 97/100

We were very impressed with the bright green color of the Akira Matcha and the grind was super fine, thanks to being stone ground very slowly to avoid building up any heat that would affect the taste of the matcha.

You can see this being done in the video above.

There is actually no clumping at all. You can almost make your matcha green tea without having to sift it first like most other matcha brands!

You can see the color and grind in the photo below.

Akira Matcha review of the color and grind

So far, Akira Matcha has all of the characteristics of the finest ceremonial grade matchas.

Next Step for the Akira Matcha Review is to prepare the matcha green tea and rate it on taste.

Akira Matcha Review - Taste

Matcha Green Tea Taste Rating 97/100

We prepared the Akira Matcha green tea in two different ways.

First, in the traditional method with a bowl and whisk and then with a milk frother. We also prepared the Akira matcha powder in a matcha latte with almond milk which gives it a slightly sweet taste opposed to with just hot water.

Both methods produced a beautiful froth on top of the matcha green tea.

Akira Matcha Preparation

Akira Matcha has a classic matcha green tea taste, very mild as compared to some matchas.

It has a creamy texture with slightly grassy overtones, just a wonderful and traditional matcha flavor.

Much more mild than our favorite matcha, Encha Matcha, but if you like a milder matcha then you will love Akira Matcha.

Final Thoughts

Overall we are very impressed with Akira Matcha. The color and grind are fantastic.

The taste is right in line with all of the best matcha powders. It's premium quality and fine grind paired with mild bitterness and an overall sweeter taste, make this a very good matcha.

The one downside that we really didn't like is the packaging. The top on the metal tin could be very difficult to open for the elderly or anyone that has issues with their hands.

Matcha Konomi offers a 100% money back guarantee on all of their one ounce tins of matcha. If you are not satisfied for any reason, simply let them know within 10 days and they will issue a full refund.
